I have 15 or so hours in my car headed back south. Anything fun along the way once I am outta Virginia?

My E92 M3 gets to stretch its legs some.

Savannah has some fun stuff to do, and it is 15 minutes off 95 onto 16. Go to Zunzis!

St. Simons and Brunswick are nice to see the beach and marshes.

When you are in McIntosh County (Darien and Eulona) in GA you need to do the speed limit. The cops there are assholes, and have speed traps set up everywhere.

Jax has some good places to eat, but construction sucks there.

I did that drive once, I remember a lot of trees, some neat forts, some terrible Florida Soda and lots of 55 mph time.

Deal’s Gap (Tail of the Dragon) because M3. Yeah, it’s a little further west than your planned route, but totally worth it. And as long as you’re diverting westward in your Bee Em Doubleyoo, stop by their plant in Greer, SC!

First, you should stop at “South of the Border,” at the NC/SC border on I-95. Essentially just a giant tourist trap, shitty motel, and firework stands. But you get lead there by lots of ridiculous and overtly racist billboards, such as:

Kinja'd!!!

You should also make it a point to stop in NC to pick up some “eastern Carolina style” pulled pork BBQ (vinegar and pepper based sauce). Trust me, it’s the best.

Be careful in South Carolina. Lot’s of speed traps and very aggressive highway patrol. I don’t know what they drive now, but the SCHP used to be famous for unmarked Camaro police cruisers.

Other than that, it’s an unfortunately boring drive. Hopefully you’ll at least get some nice weather.

Looks fantastic! I will totally stop there!

And thanks for the warning on the SCHP. I know the VA Patrol is awful. I usually throw on cruise control through VA and when I come to borders I also slow way down and hide behind an 18 wheeler for the first few miles.

Hmm...that might be too far. Lets see how I am doing on this trip...it may happen.

They’ve settled down quite a bit, I drive the interstates here daily, often hundreds of miles. They target truckers now, and they drive Tahoes and Chargers.

Bypass eastern NC/SC, go through the mountains. In an M3, you’ll regret you didn’t.

Yeah, I grew up in SC and went to college in NC, but haven’t lived there in ten years. One of the most nervous moments of my life was driving from NC to the Keys for spring break with some friends. Without being too specific, let’s just say there was some contraband in the vehicle. My friend from NYC was driving and she didn’t drop below 80 mph the whole; kept saying that she could spot cops a mile away and didn’t believe me about the unmarked Camaros. I spent the entire time through SC believing we would get pulled over and thinking, “well, I’m going to jail.”

They mainly just harass truck drivers now, and having to deal with truckers on a daily basis, I’m fine with that.

Avoid 95 at all costs and you will have a much more enjoyable time. If you have the time, Blue Ridge Parkway 100% of the way there. I drove from DC starting around 8am and ended up in Charlotte, NC around dinner time (5pm ish) by taking the whole Skyline Drive followed by about 200 miles of BRP and then local 2 lane roads. You could certainly skip Skyline Drive and pick up the BRP at the start near Waynesboro since it would save a ton of time. If you must complete the trip in one day, you would then cut back around Asheville, NC on 26 and eventually hop on 95 in SC to finish off the trip. But if you can swing a second day, the surrounding roads near Asheville and Deal’s Gap could be well worth the detour.

And if you REALLY don’t have time/interest in that, even consider taking 81 since it is way more scenic than 95. You could even take it all the way down to Chattanooga and cut back through Atlanta. ANYTHING to avoid 95!

Here is a route you can take that optimizes the best parts of BRP to hit and saves some time with some interstate driving:

Especially the area near Asheville, just some excellent driving without having to really explore to far. There are some world-class roads available too but that really deserves a couple days to explore on it’s own.

I never pass an opportunity to stop at Leonardo’s in Gainesville for a few slices of pizza. Being that it’ll be closing at some point next year, if you’ve never been, or want to go back once more, this is your chance.

http://www.leonardosgainesville.com/info.html#slice

If I don’t have a reason to head up there soon, we’re just going to drive up from St Pete for lunch once day.

Live in Maryland for 2 years...I’ve been volunteering to parachute into Syria/Afghanistan/Iraq for the past year with the Army...and I don’t know how to parachute, I’ll just figure it out on the way down. So Florida is a cool dip in the pool.

I need to do a post on my drive down from Annapolis to Florida....during Hurricane Matthew.....I went with the design to do some Oppo stuff...and ended up doing some serious Oppo driving and evasion through the south east. 22 hour drive.

Yeah you do. When I drove from San Antonio to Roswell, I just took highways, I didn’t want to extend it longer than nessecary.
